One quick and easy tip for building your barbershop clientele is to always carry business cards with you. You never know when you’re going to run into that next potential barbershop customer. You could be at the grocery store or even out to dinner. No matter where you are, you’re always building a rapport with people. Just simply reach in your pocket, hand someone your business card and let them know, “Hey, I work at XYZ Barber Shop. I’d love the opportunity to work with you.”

One quick and easy tip to help build your barbershop clientele is to always ask for referrals. When your client is at the front desk and they’re cashing out, simply shake their hand and ask them, “Could you please tell your friends about me?” Always remember, customers come to you not just for a good men’s haircut. They also come to you because they like you. They’d be more than happy to help you out, and in most cases, even flattered to help send more business to your barbershop.

Barber School Success Part 2 – Practice, Practice, Practice

In this blog I’d like to talkabout how to be successful in barber or cosmetology school.

The tip for this blog is to practice as many men’s haircuts and shaves as you can on the clinic floor. Make sure to practice all of the haircutting and shaving services you know you’re going to be providing when you are working full time as a barber. In school you have a certain number of men’s haircuts and shaves you have to sign off on so you can graduate, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t do more. The more practice you get learning how to cut men’s hair, the more good habits you’re going to form. You’re also going to show your teachers that you take your education very seriously and you take a lot of pride in what you do.

Barber School Success Tips: Always Be Prepared

One of  the best ways to get the most out of barber school is to be prepared at all times. Being prepared for barber school means to always have your textbook with you and your tools with you. You can’t learn theory if you don’t have your textbook with you. You can’t learn how to give a clipper cut if you don’t have your clippers with you.

Another suggestion is not to lend your barber tools or barber books to anyone. A number of things can happen if lend them out. The day you need your textbook the student borrowing it could be out sick. The day you need your clippers that student might be out sick. The person borrowing your clippers might have dropped them by mistake and chipped the cutting blade without telling you about it. If they don’t tell you and you go to use the clipper on a customer you might cut them. If any of these things happen you are the one who is going to look bad.

Always keep your barbers textbooks with you as well as your barber tools – cleaned and in good working condition.

How To Cut Men’s Hair – Always Keep A Positive Attitude

Energy is contagious. This works both ways weather the energy is positive or negative. Attitudes also work the same way. One of the most important things you can possibly do when learning how to cut men’s hair is to  maintain a positive attitude at all times. Customers notice everything and can sense anything.

Think about that one customer you have who sits down in your barber chair for a men’s haircut and takes a long lasting loud breath. Then he hits you with it. He starts complaining for the duration of the haircut about anything and everything. How does this make you feel? Is it a drain on your energy? How does it affect your attitude? How long does it take to get rid of this feeling?

Now, think about the customer that you have been looking forward to cutting his hair since you noticed his name on the appointment book. You know as soon as he sits in your barber chair he is going to tell you how great of a day it is, how nice the weather is, or ask you how you are doing and really listen to your response. How does this make you feel? Does it completely lift your spirits immediately? Does it put you in a positive mindset? How long does it last?

Which scenario is most appealing to you? I am sure you answered the second one. What if you could make every customer you come in contact with feel this positive and energetic? How many repeat clients would you have? How high would your retention rate be?
Just imaging all you could accomplish just by maintaining a positive attitude.

How To Cut Hair: How To Build A Clientele – Part 2

One of the most important parts of learning how to cut hair is learning how to build a clientele. The bigger your clientele is the more money you will make. This is the second part in this series of blogs that will give you some simple tips on how to build your clientele.

Opportunities arise all the time to attract new customers. It is extremely important to have business cards handy all the time to take advantage of these situations. We are building a rapport with people all of the time in our daily routines and activities. For example: You may be out to dinner and strike up a conversation with the waiter or waitress. Before you leave you can mention you work at XYZ Barbershop or Hair Salon, hand them a card, and give them one quick reason why they should come to you for their next haircut. It could be your years of experience, you may include a relaxing hot towel treatment with every shampoo, every haircut comes with a hot lather neck shave, the shampoo treatment comes with a relaxing scalp massage, or maybe it’s your convenient evening hours. A big part of attracting new customers is to win people over with your personality. The more someone likes you, the more likely they are to come to you for their next haircut and keep coming back.

How To Be A Barber: Barbershop Customer Service Tips – Part 4

Saying goodbye to the customer in the correct way is just as important as welcoming the customer into the barbershop. We want the customer to feel just as appreciated and important as they felt when they came into the barbershop.

There are a few important things to consider doing every time a customer gets out of your chair and leaves the barbershop. It is really important to reinforce the service they are getting. We are selling ourselves the whole time the customer is in the barbershopshop. It is a good idea to compliment the hair cut in a way that does not come off as arrogant or bragging. For example, “This low fade really suits you”, or “This haircut will really grow in nicely. It does not look like you just had your haircut and as long as you come in within 4-5 weeks it will never look like you need one.” Something along those lines will work nicely.

When the customer gets out of the barber chair walk them up to the reception desk or wherever they are going to pay for the haircut. Thank your customer with a hand shake and always use their name. It is also a good idea to leave off with something like “It was nice talking to you today” or “I look forward to seeing you next time/month”. This is a great way to leave off so your customer feels just as appreciated and welcome on the way out of the barbershop as they did on the way in.

How To Be A Barber – Educate Your Customer About Their Haircut

Describing the haircut to your customer in as much detail as possible will show your customer you value their business and take pride in being a barber. As you probably know by now or will soon find out men have a difficult time explaining how they want their haircut. Even if the customer does know exactly how he wants his haircut he usually feels a little uncomfortable or like he is being “ too fussy” by explaining it in detail. It is our job to make this process as easy and painless as possible. Guys are not interested in a long drawn out customer consultation. I have been working with a barber for years who has really simplified this. Once he senses the customer is unsure or uncomfortable explaining the cut all he says is “How about I just make it look good?” This always gets a laugh and puts the customer at ease. The one thing I have to specify is this particular barber has been cutting hair for 25 years so he can tell just by looking at someone and the type of hair they have what style will look good.

I recommend telling your customer exactly how to ask for his haircut. For example: “I layered the top to about four inches in length so you have hair to comb and the crown will not stand up. The sides are tapered with a 3/8″ blade 2 fingers high. I tapered the outline of the haircut so it will grow in naturally”. I explain it to them exactly how I think it through when I am cutting it. Another good idea is to write it down on a business card for them so they can just hand it to you or whoever cuts it next time. I find this works in my shops because we all cut the same way. If you use a computer system with industry software there is usually an area to leave notes with the customer’s information. This makes it even easier for them because the notes will be on the work ticket when it prints out. This is another way to leave a positive lasting impression on your customer.

How To Cut Hair – Learn How To Communicate With Your Customer Effectively

When you are learning how to cut hair communicating with your  customer is the secret to keeping them satisfied and coming back. The best thing you can do to is make them feel like they are your most important customer. For the duration of the haircut they should be the only person in your life.

The first portion of the communication is to find out how your customer likes their hair cut. If they are not sure and relying on us to assist them in deciding the best style for them it is a good idea to find out what they do for a living, what activities they are involved in, how much effort they want to put into styling, ect. This will help you decide what the best haircut for them is.

The next part of the communication process is to build a professional relationship with the customer. We are providing a personal service so it is important that the customer likes and feels comfortable with us. The trick is to get to know them without getting too personal. Finding out a common interest or two really helps. Make it a priority to learn a little bit about what is going on in current events, sports, the weather, ect. This way you can carry on a short conversation about a lot of different topics. Let the customer dominate the conversation and avoid all controversial topics such as politics and religion.

Another great tip I teach to all of my barbers is to make it a point to remember one thing talked about during the previous haircut and bring it up the next time the customer is at the shop or salon. This tells your customer you are paying attention to them and really care. If you have a difficult time with your memory it can be a similar question for everyone. Something related to a close family member, favorite sports team, vacation spot, ect. The more you customer likes you personally, the more likely they are to become a repeat customer and excellent tipper.
