One quick and easy tip to help build your barbershop clientele is to always ask for referrals. When your client is at the front desk and they’re cashing out, simply shake their hand and ask them, “Could you please tell your friends about me?” Always remember, customers come to you not just for a good men’s haircut. They also come to you because they like you. They’d be more than happy to help you out, and in most cases, even flattered to help send more business to your barbershop.

Clipper Cutting: How High To Cut A Fade With Longer Top

One of the most important things to consider when you are learning how to fade hair is how high it is going to be. There are a lot of things to consider as you think about this question. Some of them include cowlicks, hair thickness, hair color, head shape, surface of the scalp (lumps, bumps, and/or dents), moles, scars, customer’s age, customer’s job, desired hairstyle, the customer’s preference.

A very important note to keep in mind is that no matter how good you are at fading hair, if the fade is too high or too low your customer will not think it is a good haircut. I will say it another way. If the haircut is 100% technically correct but it is not exactly what the customer wants they won’t be happy. This is especially true with the fade haircut customer. It doesn’t matter if they are a young kid or older suit and tie professional. These are the most particular and hardest customers to please.

There are many modern and classic men’s hairstyles that require a longer top. Even though these styles require a longer top, a close taper or fade in around the outline of the haircut is required to finish off the haircut. The most important thing to keep in mind is: The longer the hair on top the lower the fade or taper should be cut. If the fade is cut to high the haircut will look out of balance. The best way to avoid this is to start the haircut by layering the top section. Next, cut the round of the head section using the top section as the guide. Before starting the fade, cut the sides and back section to give yourself a guide for the fade. After these three steps you will know exactly how high the fade should be cut to perfectly blend into the longer top.

How To Cut Men’s Hair – Always Keep A Positive Attitude

Energy is contagious. This works both ways weather the energy is positive or negative. Attitudes also work the same way. One of the most important things you can possibly do when learning how to cut men’s hair is to  maintain a positive attitude at all times. Customers notice everything and can sense anything.

Think about that one customer you have who sits down in your barber chair for a men’s haircut and takes a long lasting loud breath. Then he hits you with it. He starts complaining for the duration of the haircut about anything and everything. How does this make you feel? Is it a drain on your energy? How does it affect your attitude? How long does it take to get rid of this feeling?

Now, think about the customer that you have been looking forward to cutting his hair since you noticed his name on the appointment book. You know as soon as he sits in your barber chair he is going to tell you how great of a day it is, how nice the weather is, or ask you how you are doing and really listen to your response. How does this make you feel? Does it completely lift your spirits immediately? Does it put you in a positive mindset? How long does it last?

Which scenario is most appealing to you? I am sure you answered the second one. What if you could make every customer you come in contact with feel this positive and energetic? How many repeat clients would you have? How high would your retention rate be?
Just imaging all you could accomplish just by maintaining a positive attitude.

How To Be A Barber: Barbershop Customer Service Tips – Part 4

Saying goodbye to the customer in the correct way is just as important as welcoming the customer into the barbershop. We want the customer to feel just as appreciated and important as they felt when they came into the barbershop.

There are a few important things to consider doing every time a customer gets out of your chair and leaves the barbershop. It is really important to reinforce the service they are getting. We are selling ourselves the whole time the customer is in the barbershopshop. It is a good idea to compliment the hair cut in a way that does not come off as arrogant or bragging. For example, “This low fade really suits you”, or “This haircut will really grow in nicely. It does not look like you just had your haircut and as long as you come in within 4-5 weeks it will never look like you need one.” Something along those lines will work nicely.

When the customer gets out of the barber chair walk them up to the reception desk or wherever they are going to pay for the haircut. Thank your customer with a hand shake and always use their name. It is also a good idea to leave off with something like “It was nice talking to you today” or “I look forward to seeing you next time/month”. This is a great way to leave off so your customer feels just as appreciated and welcome on the way out of the barbershop as they did on the way in.

If they are not sure and are relying on us to assist them in deciding the best style for them it is a good idea to find out what they do for a living, what activities they are involved in, how much effort they want to put into styling, ect. This will help you decide what the best haircut for them is.

A haircut is a personal service so it is important that the customer likes and feels comfortable with us. The trick is to get to know them without getting too personal. Finding out a common interest or two really helps. Make it a priority to learn a little bit about what is going on in current events, sports, the weather, ect. This way you can carry on a short conversation about a lot of different topics. Let the customer dominate the conversation and avoid all controversial topics such as politics and religion.

Another great tip I teach to all of my barbers is to make it a point to remember one thing you talked about during the previous haircut and bring it up the next time the customer is at the shop or salon. This tells your customer you are paying attention to them and really care. If you have a difficult time with your memory it can be a similar question for everyone. Something related to a close family member, favorite sports team, vacation spot, ect. The more you customer likes you personally, the more likely they are to become a repeat haircut customer and excellent tipper.

Clipper Cutting: Clipper Maintenance

You are only as good as your tools so it is extremely important to have the best clippers available. As stated in previous blogs we recommend you have three clippers to complete your barbering kit: A detachable blade clipper, an adjustable clipper, and a trimmer. It is equally important to take care of your clippers. There is a four step process required to keep your clippers clean and in good working condition:

1. Use a clipper brush to gently brush of your clipper blades in between every use. This will keep off any wet hair which can cause the blade to rust. It will also avoid getting the previous clients hair on the next client. Lastly, removing the excess hair will keep the blade moving back and forth at maximum speed and efficiency.

2. Spray disinfectant on the clippers after brushing them off. Point the can away from you and spray the clipper blade while it is running. This will kill any germs or viruses and keep the blade clean.

3. Lubricate the blades. Use quality clipper oil and place a small amount of oil on the clipper blade wherever you see metal rubbing against metal. This will allow the blade to run smother and extend the life of the motor.

4. Blade wash your blades at the end of the work day. While the clipper is running dip just the blade in the solution for 10 seconds. Lift it out of the solution and let the loose hair drip out of the blades and dry them off. All of that loose hair keeps the blade from running at optimum speed. This will also kill any germs or viruses.

Maintaining your clippers like this on a daily basis will keep them in excellent working condition for a long time.

Clipper Cutting: The Art Of The Taper – Part 2

In the barbering world the word taper is used often. It can mean many things and be very confusing. By definition a tapered haircut means shorter hair around the perimeter of the haircut gradually getting longer. Sometimes it makes more sense to think of it as longer hair tapered down to shorter hair. It is really that simple. That is all a taper or tapered means.

The best way to finish off a haircut is with a tapered neckline. A tapered neckline is a natural looking hairline. In other words instead of a line on the back of the neck it is faded out making it look more natural and professional.

I am not sure if it is because I have been thinking about this topic a lot but I have seen more squared off hairlines than ever. As mentioned previously the correct way to finish off a haircut is to taper the neckline. If a man absolutely wants a squared off hairline there is a correct way and wrong way to do it.

The correct way to square off a hairline is to go through the steps to taper it out and at the very end make a straight line with the trimmer. Make sure this line is a low as possible and the portion of the hair graduating from shorter to longer is still visible.

The wrong way to square off a hairline is to cut the sides and back to one length and then square it off without any graduation. Even worse is to cut this line higher than the natural hairline. This can ruin the best of haircuts.

With any man’s haircut a natural finish is best. It shows a different level of professionalism and education. There are a lot of licensed barbers and cosmetologists out there. This is a great way for you to differentiate yourself and increase your retention rate.

How To Cut Hair: Mind your Business? – Part 1

This is a great question and one every employee of a barbershop or hair salon should think about. That’s right – Employee. Even if you work for someone you are in your own business. The fact that this is a commission business means the more haircuts or services you provide the more money you will make. It’s that simple. Build your chair and you will build your paycheck.

I would like you to imagine a 5 foot circle around your barber chair or beauty chair. This is your space. You have control of everything in it. You have no control of what goes on outside of that circle. Wasting time on what goes on outside of your circle takes away from all of the things you can do to build YOUR business. There are too many distractions to list but probably the number one to avoid is barbershop or hair salon gossip. It creates a negative energy/atmosphere even if the customers do not witness it in person.

To make the most out of your space treat it as your home. Just like your home is a reflection of you so is your work space. Keep it as clean as you would when you are home. Treat your customers the same way you treat invited guests. Whenever my family has invited guests over to our house it is always clean and we are on our best behavior. Clipper Cutting: Please Don’t Cut By Numbers – Part 4

Barbering or Men’s haircutting is a great business to be in and can be fun and rewarding. Being a barber can also give you a good steady income with job security. The barber business is a respected profession which should be taken seriously. We are all fortunate to be making our living this way in relaxed and relatively stress free atmosphere.

In previous blogs I wrote about why it is not a good idea to cut by numbers. In this blog I am going to give you real life examples on how to explain to the customer how they get their haircut. This will also be how they ask for their haircut next time they come into the barbershop or salon.

When talking with the customer of how high they like there fade there a couple of ways to go about it. You can ask them to point out where they like their fade; Low (just above the ear and below the occipital bone), medium (halfway to the temple area and the middle of the occipital bone), or high (to the temple area and above the occipital bone).

I personally like to measure the fade by the width of my fingers. Here are a few examples on how to explain or have your customer ask for their fade:

– 3 finger 3/8” taper
– 3 finger 3/8” taper with a 1finger 1/16” taper around the outline
– ½” Taper to the temples
– 2 finger ¼” Taper

These are just a few and you can come up with any combination. I will usually write this down on the back of a business card for the customer to carry with them so they know how to ask for their haircut. It makes the haircut sound much more detailed and is another reason for your customer to keep coming back to you.
