Barber School Success Part 4 – Keep Your Barber Tools With You At All Times

In this blog I would like to talk about how to be successful in barber or cosmetology school. The tip for this blog is one the most important things you need to do to be prepared for barber or cosmetology school.

Keep your barber tools with you at all times. It’s not a good idea to let your fellow students borrow your tools. What ultimately will  happen is somebody may break your tools, they may forget to bring them to school to give them back to you, or they might not be in school the next day to give you your tools back to you. This will reflect poorly on you and is not how you want to look in front of your instuctors. Your instructors are the ones who will be recommending you to your future employers.

All of your tools are included in your kit for a reason. You never know when you’re going to need them. Make sure you keep them with you at all times, keep them in good condition, and keep them clean. This is going to show your teachers as well as your classmates that you take what you do and your education very seriously. When people like myself and my colleagues come into your school to recruit your teachers are going to put you at the top of their list.

Barber School Success Part 3 – Keep Your Barber Textbook With You At All Times

The tip for this blog is always have your barber textbook with you. Your textbook comes in your barber school kit for a reason. All the information you need to know for the real world and each school day is in there. You can’t learn from your barber textbook if you don’t have it with you.

I can’t tell you how many times I’m at a barber school or a cosmetology school and students are fumbling around to borrow a barber or cosmetology textbook from a fellow student with the barber instructor asking “Why don’t you have your textbook?” If you bring it home put it in your car or in your backpack so you are done using it.

Another thing I learned early on is to never let anybody borrow my barber books. It never fails. You think you are helping out until the next day your fellow student is either out sick or forgets to bring your book back to school. This will make you look unprepared and unorganized.

Barber Tools – How To Hold The Barber Scissor

In this blog I would like to talk to you about your barbering scissor, how to hold it, and how it works.

To start out, I’m going to xplaine how to hold the barber scissor. Put your thumb in the thumb hole, not past your cuticle and your ring finger in the ring finger hole somewhere between your first knuckle and your middle knuckle. When you’re cutting just move your thumb and keep your other fingers stationary. By just moving your thumb the cutting blade only will move. This is how the scissor cuts correctly.  If you drop your elbow and hunch over both blades will move causing your barbering scissor to cut incorrectly.

Clipper Cutting: How High To Cut A Fade With Longer Top

One of the most important things to consider when you are learning how to fade hair is how high it is going to be. There are a lot of things to consider as you think about this question. Some of them include cowlicks, hair thickness, hair color, head shape, surface of the scalp (lumps, bumps, and/or dents), moles, scars, customer’s age, customer’s job, desired hairstyle, the customer’s preference.

A very important note to keep in mind is that no matter how good you are at fading hair, if the fade is too high or too low your customer will not think it is a good haircut. I will say it another way. If the haircut is 100% technically correct but it is not exactly what the customer wants they won’t be happy. This is especially true with the fade haircut customer. It doesn’t matter if they are a young kid or older suit and tie professional. These are the most particular and hardest customers to please.

There are many modern and classic men’s hairstyles that require a longer top. Even though these styles require a longer top, a close taper or fade in around the outline of the haircut is required to finish off the haircut. The most important thing to keep in mind is: The longer the hair on top the lower the fade or taper should be cut. If the fade is cut to high the haircut will look out of balance. The best way to avoid this is to start the haircut by layering the top section. Next, cut the round of the head section using the top section as the guide. Before starting the fade, cut the sides and back section to give yourself a guide for the fade. After these three steps you will know exactly how high the fade should be cut to perfectly blend into the longer top.

How To Cut Men’s Hair – Always Keep A Positive Attitude

Energy is contagious. This works both ways weather the energy is positive or negative. Attitudes also work the same way. One of the most important things you can possibly do when learning how to cut men’s hair is to  maintain a positive attitude at all times. Customers notice everything and can sense anything.

Think about that one customer you have who sits down in your barber chair for a men’s haircut and takes a long lasting loud breath. Then he hits you with it. He starts complaining for the duration of the haircut about anything and everything. How does this make you feel? Is it a drain on your energy? How does it affect your attitude? How long does it take to get rid of this feeling?

Now, think about the customer that you have been looking forward to cutting his hair since you noticed his name on the appointment book. You know as soon as he sits in your barber chair he is going to tell you how great of a day it is, how nice the weather is, or ask you how you are doing and really listen to your response. How does this make you feel? Does it completely lift your spirits immediately? Does it put you in a positive mindset? How long does it last?

Which scenario is most appealing to you? I am sure you answered the second one. What if you could make every customer you come in contact with feel this positive and energetic? How many repeat clients would you have? How high would your retention rate be?
Just imaging all you could accomplish just by maintaining a positive attitude.

How To Cut Hair: How To Build A Clientele – Part 2

One of the most important parts of learning how to cut hair is learning how to build a clientele. The bigger your clientele is the more money you will make. This is the second part in this series of blogs that will give you some simple tips on how to build your clientele.

Opportunities arise all the time to attract new customers. It is extremely important to have business cards handy all the time to take advantage of these situations. We are building a rapport with people all of the time in our daily routines and activities. For example: You may be out to dinner and strike up a conversation with the waiter or waitress. Before you leave you can mention you work at XYZ Barbershop or Hair Salon, hand them a card, and give them one quick reason why they should come to you for their next haircut. It could be your years of experience, you may include a relaxing hot towel treatment with every shampoo, every haircut comes with a hot lather neck shave, the shampoo treatment comes with a relaxing scalp massage, or maybe it’s your convenient evening hours. A big part of attracting new customers is to win people over with your personality. The more someone likes you, the more likely they are to come to you for their next haircut and keep coming back.

How To Be A Barber: Barbershop Customer Service Tips – Part 4

Saying goodbye to the customer in the correct way is just as important as welcoming the customer into the barbershop. We want the customer to feel just as appreciated and important as they felt when they came into the barbershop.

There are a few important things to consider doing every time a customer gets out of your chair and leaves the barbershop. It is really important to reinforce the service they are getting. We are selling ourselves the whole time the customer is in the barbershopshop. It is a good idea to compliment the hair cut in a way that does not come off as arrogant or bragging. For example, “This low fade really suits you”, or “This haircut will really grow in nicely. It does not look like you just had your haircut and as long as you come in within 4-5 weeks it will never look like you need one.” Something along those lines will work nicely.

When the customer gets out of the barber chair walk them up to the reception desk or wherever they are going to pay for the haircut. Thank your customer with a hand shake and always use their name. It is also a good idea to leave off with something like “It was nice talking to you today” or “I look forward to seeing you next time/month”. This is a great way to leave off so your customer feels just as appreciated and welcome on the way out of the barbershop as they did on the way in.

Barber Classes – How To Keep Your Customer Coming Back

Communicating with your customer is the secret to keeping them satisfied and coming back to you for their haircut. The best thing you can do to is make them feel like they are your most important customer. For the duration of the haircut they should be the only person in your life.

The first portion of the communication process is to find out how your customer likes their hair cut. If they are not sure and are relying on us to assist them in deciding the best style for them it is a good idea to find out what they do for a living, what activities they are involved in, how much effort they want to put into styling, ect. This will help you decide what the best haircut for them is.

The next part of the communication process is to build a professional relationship with the customer. A haircut is a personal service so it is important that the customer likes and feels comfortable with us. The trick is to get to know them without getting too personal. Finding out a common interest or two really helps. Make it a priority to learn a little bit about what is going on in current events, sports, the weather, ect. This way you can carry on a short conversation about a lot of different topics. Let the customer dominate the conversation and avoid all controversial topics such as politics and religion.

Another great tip I teach to all of my barbers is to make it a point to remember one thing you talked about during the previous haircut and bring it up the next time the customer is at the shop or salon. This tells your customer you are paying attention to them and really care. If you have a difficult time with your memory it can be a similar question for everyone. Something related to a close family member, favorite sports team, vacation spot, ect. The more you customer likes you personally, the more likely they are to become a repeat haircut customer and excellent tipper.

How To Be A Barber – Educate Your Customer About Their Haircut

Describing the haircut to your customer in as much detail as possible will show your customer you value their business and take pride in being a barber. As you probably know by now or will soon find out men have a difficult time explaining how they want their haircut. Even if the customer does know exactly how he wants his haircut he usually feels a little uncomfortable or like he is being “ too fussy” by explaining it in detail. It is our job to make this process as easy and painless as possible. Guys are not interested in a long drawn out customer consultation. I have been working with a barber for years who has really simplified this. Once he senses the customer is unsure or uncomfortable explaining the cut all he says is “How about I just make it look good?” This always gets a laugh and puts the customer at ease. The one thing I have to specify is this particular barber has been cutting hair for 25 years so he can tell just by looking at someone and the type of hair they have what style will look good.

I recommend telling your customer exactly how to ask for his haircut. For example: “I layered the top to about four inches in length so you have hair to comb and the crown will not stand up. The sides are tapered with a 3/8″ blade 2 fingers high. I tapered the outline of the haircut so it will grow in naturally”. I explain it to them exactly how I think it through when I am cutting it. Another good idea is to write it down on a business card for them so they can just hand it to you or whoever cuts it next time. I find this works in my shops because we all cut the same way. If you use a computer system with industry software there is usually an area to leave notes with the customer’s information. This makes it even easier for them because the notes will be on the work ticket when it prints out. This is another way to leave a positive lasting impression on your customer.
